Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

Click Here To Listen While You Read!

Any connoisseur of traditional Irish music and song would be pardoned for viewing the title of this song with a certain amount of suspicion, having subconsciously put it on a par with such nauseous pieces of work as Paddy McGinty's Goat, Galway Bay, My Heart's In the Heart of Killarney or for that matter any of those songs pertaining to the 'Isle of Shamrocks and Shillelaghs'. [...] However, titles can be misleading, as is this one, and the song is in fact traditional - again a Northern one and probably from Donegal - and at most can be faulted on the rather over-sentimental and hence somewhat unrealistic treatment of emigration.

From Derry quai we sailed away
On the 23rd of May
We were taken on board by a pleasant crew
Bound for Americay
Fresh water there we did take on
Five thousand gallons or more
In case we'd run short going to NewYork
Far away from the Shamrock shore.

So fare thee well, sweet Lisa dear
And likewise to Derry town,
And twice farewell to my comrades bold,
Who still dwell on that sainted ground
If ever fortune will favour me
And I do have money in store,
I will come back and wed the sweet Lassie I left
On Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

We sailed three days, we were all seasick
And no-one on board was free,
We were all confined unto our bunks
With no one to pity poor me,
No fond mother dear, no father kind
To comfort my head went to sore
This made me think more on the wee girl I left
On Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore.

We savely reached the other side
In fifteen and twenty days,
We were taken as passengers by a man
And led round in six different ways,
So each of us drunk a parting glas
In case that we never meet more,
And we bade farewell to old Ireland
And Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore.

So fare thee well, sweet Lisa dear
And likewise to Derry town,
And twice farewell to my comrades bold,
Who still dwell on that sainted ground
If fame or fortune will favour me
And I do have money in store,
I'll go back and I'll wed the wee Lassy I left
On Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore.

Claudine Langille's Mention of Celticado

James Bunting, Claudine Langille
Adam Sweet
Autumn leaves are falling, days here in Vermont are bright and sunny, and it's time to dream new projects into existence. The new Gypsy Reel, Live 2017, is done, out, and being played on radio stations around the US. I will add it to my titles to purchase here; meanwhile, just email me if you'd like a copy.

Our Mount Hollywood Studio has moved into a new dimension. Now, in addition to being a full service recording studio, we are doing live performances and streaming on Facebook! Had a great response to our first concert. More in the works!

I had a wonderful summer in Nova Scotia, and thanks to a great new session at the Saltbox Brewpub in Mahone Bay led by Eilidh and Paul Buchanan, I learned some wonderful Shetland tunes.

I continue to teach fretted instruments at Connecticut Academy of Irish Music in Wethersfield CT on Sundays, and I also have some fantastic students who take lessons here at Mount Hollywood. Always room for more!

I enjoy playing contradances with The Shrewd Berries. I occasionally play with Celticado in Western Massachusetts

Review of Rotary Records by Celticado

Rotary Records
Celticado (Jamie Bunting and Adam Sweet) recorded their first album "Celtic Men" at Rotary Records in May 2010.  It is an excellent studio with the latest recording equipment and studio software.  It is very comfortable and because everything is of the highest quality, the recordings are fantastic.  Highly recommended.

How did you get into traditional irish music?

Adam Sweet, Celticado
"My Mother was a good dancer and my father hated dancing, so when I was old enough, she would take me out on the floor. It was 1972 in Boston, MA. I had started violin lessons at 4, so had made it through Suzuki book 6 by then. I distinctly remember watching the fiddler on stage who was having such a good time and thinking that was what I wanted to do when I grew up…I joined a dance band in High School and played for contradances all over the Boston area. In college, I majored in Ethnomusicology, doing an exam on the history of bluegrass and Americana music, my first exposure to Scots-Irish and Anglo-Irish music of the 19th and 20th centuries (what we now call "traditional Irish music). I traveled to Ireland in 1996 to take lessons with Frankie Gavin and play in the pubs in Kilfenora and Galway. Since then, I’ve been playing what I simply call Celtic music with my colleague Jamie Bunting in our little duo Celticado" ~ Adam Sweet, fiddler

James Bunting, Adam Sweet
Celticado has performed for literally hundreds of weddings. With over 30 years of professional performance experience combined, they can assemble just about any style of Celtic music for any special event.

Inspired by Ireland’s great Irish groups Lunasa, De Dannan, Altan, Bothy Band and Clannad, The Celtic Project's driven pursuit of melody interwoven by rhythm results in breathtaking arrangements that stir the soul and free the mind!

Celticado is the culmination from among the top musical talent in western Massachusetts. Founding member Adam R Sweet (of Woodkerne, Crossing The Pond, and The Americana Project) - on fiddle, contributes a stellar celtic sound with a fantastic skirling style, his bow flashing colors across the imagination landscape. Jim Bunting on mandolin, guitar and bouzouki brings a rich heritage of improvisation and American cultural roots to this Celtic mix, laying the foundation with a solid backbone, adding splashes of fire and water, literally burning and cooling as the music progresses.

Primarily Celtic in nature, the genres covered by Celticado include traditional Irish tunes by Turloch O'Carolan and others, Scottish, Welsh, French Canadian, Nova Scotian and New England Contra; as well as folk songs from the great American Folk history - many of them with roots in Irish and Scottish folk music
